Summary

My postdoctoral project investigates engineers’ professional communicative repertoires with special reference to multilingualism, intercultural communication and multimodality. The ethnographic study describes what repertoires are and how they develop. The project seeks to find out how engineers conceptualize their repertoires and communication and how repertoires and their different dimensions are manifested in various multilingual practices in global working life. Theoretically the study draws on sociolinguistics and methodologically on discourse analysis, interactional sociolinguistics and multimodality. The study sheds new light on communicative repertoires in working life and the findings can be implemented in vocational and higher education and applied in developing teaching material.
