Summary

This postdoctoral grant is to be used to carry out research related to the mathematics of geometric minimization problems and the special classes of mappings related to them. Such problems often lead to, or are intimately connected with, the study of nonlinear partial differental equations. Examples of these equations include divergence-type elliptic systems and the Beltrami equation which characterizes quasiregular mappings. Our aim is to answer several open questions related to the existence, regularity and properties of such mappings.

The nature of the research to be carried out is theoretical, but many of the questions studied are directly related to models of real-world phenomena such as elasticity, dynamical systems, phase transitioning and fluid dynamics. Many of the interesting problems in modern mathematics are closely related to the study of these concepts, and hence the project aims to be competitive on an international level of research.

This research is to be carried out at the University of Jyväskylä. Several short and longer research visits are planned to other international institutes, most notably to collaborators at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and Syracuse University.
