Abstract
This article addresses teacher students' Language Aware Agency in the new and challenging situation of guiding multilingual learners of different ages in distance in the 2020 pandemic situation. The data of the study consist of the learning diaries and reports by eleven teacher students on their online tutoring experiences and were analysed by Thematical Content Analysis. The analysis focused on the elements that either enhanced or restricted the agency of teacher students. The results show that their agency varied both individually and situationally throughout the guidance process. The agency of some teacher students strengthened as they actively solved the encountered problems. Conversely, for other teacher students the challenges were overwhelming, diminishing their agency. In a societally demanding situation, the contribution of teacher education to authentic community issues was seen important.
