Abstract
The focus of this study is on both interdisciplinary guidance and counselling and collaboration from the perspective of the employees working in Finnish interdisciplinary guidance services, that is, One-Stop Guidance Centers. The aim of the study is to achieve the phenomenon of interdisciplinary collaboration conceptually, theoretically and empirically in order to deepen the understanding of interdisciplinary guidance and counselling. Thus, the purpose of the study is to answer the main research question: “How can interdisciplinary collaboration be constructed as a working method for guidance and counselling?” This mixed-methods study includes three sub-studies. The first, a survey sub-study, covers the process of survey development and data collection (N=136 respondents) in order to map employees’ experiences of interdisciplinary collaboration. The second, an employee action observation -sub-study (N=110 observed situations), focuses on the manifestations of interdisciplinarity in collaboration and counselling actions. The third, an interview sub-study (N=6 interviewed), captures employees’ and coordinators’ understanding of the construction of interdisciplinary collaboration. The theoretical framework of the study is based on Engeström’s theory of developmental work research and activity system model as well as postmodern counselling theories. According to the outcomes, the construction of interdisciplinary collaboration as a working method for guidance and counselling is a cyclic process. It is based on the structural stability of the guidance service, which emphasizes organizing the collaboration and building well-functioning internal structures. Interdisciplinary collaboration is concretized as interdisciplinary ways of working and competence in guidance and counselling, which require a specific metacompetence. As an outcome, I create a model of interdisciplinary guidance and counselling, which provides a research-based tool for the implementation and development of interdisciplinary guidance and counselling
