Abstract

Over the past decade, Finnish basic education (grades 1-9) has undergone an assessment reform that has resulted in a criteria-based final assessment. A prerequisite for good criteria-based assessment is functional assessment criteria. In Finland, teachers are responsible for the design and implementation of assessment, so their views on the criteria are crucial. In this qualitative study, I examine teachers’ (N = 28) views of assessment criteria in physics and mathematics. The lack of detail, the incoherence of the underlying taxonomy, and the need to calibrate low and high grades were emphasized in the teachers’ responses. The challenges identified can be used to inform the development of assessment criteria, both within and beyond basic education.
