Abstract

Background -- In a new healthcare model patients with knee symptoms can be managed conservatively by referring
them to a physiotherapist instead of an orthopaedic surgeon. Methods -- Patients (n=130) with knee symptoms had a single advisory session with a physiotherapist. One year after the visit they were sent a questionnaire inquiring about functioning and health related quality of life (HRQOL). The use of specialized healthcare services within the 12-month period was recorded. Results -- A total of 73 patients with knee symptoms (mean age 60, 56% women, 86% with osteoarthritis of the knee) participated in the follow–up. Of these patients 86% received only conservative treatment while 14% needed operative treatments. Significant improvements in HRQOL and functioning were observed. Conclusion -- Conservative treatment consisting of a single advisory session with a physiotherapist benefited most of the patients with knee symptoms as they experienced improvement in certain dimensions of HRQOL and functioning.
