Summary

This dissertation explores the discursive construction of Soviet music politics between 1917 and the 1930s from the point of view of central historical and political concepts. Concepts such as people, freedom, democracy and Europe played a central role when the Soviet music and cultural politics went through a process renegotiation after the revolutions. The aim of this process was to integrate existing musical institutions, views and conceptions as part of new society emphasizing revolution. With a language-oriented approach towards history, this dissertation opens up the formation of Soviet music and cultural history and presents a view to an exceptionally interesting intersection of language, politics, ideology and art.
