Summary

The primary goal of this project is to address the need to attain an in-depth understanding of how cyber-physical services (CPSs) can be innovated in a continuous manner. We will specifically study the application of a development and operations (DevOps) approach in the context of CPS innovations and how this process affects value creation by firms and their customers. The project uses a multi-method research approach. The data set will consist of approximately 10 in-depth case studies of leading CPS developer firms in Finland and the USA. We expect to conduct 70–80 interviews with firm representatives. In addition, we will collect sensor-based data about customers’ CPS use and will use artificial intelligence-enabled analytics tools to analyze the data. The overall project objective is to develop a framework for continuous CPS innovation and to explain how value is created through the service innovation process.
