Summary
Metabolic disorders (MDs) including non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are major health problems. We will use commensal gut microbes to elucidate the mechanisms that affect host metabolic health both at organism and molecular level. This knowledge is needed to further understand the role of specific diets and therapeutic use of bacteria for prevention/treatment of MDs.
Specifically, we will confirm the disease-causing/preventive role of the specific gut microbes, elucidate the underlying pathologic mechanisms for the development of effective treatment strategies, combine data collected from human diets, gut microbiota composition, and in vitro studies to identify specific dietary compounds that affect the abundance of the harmful and beneficial microbes, to treat/prevent MDs in animal models and humans targeting the abundance harmful and beneficial microbes by specific diets.
