Summary

Explanations are at the core of understanding: they are the way to make sense of the world. Therefore, the ability to explain is a key competence of teachers and in teacher education an attention should be paid on the explanations’ role in learning. In this project, the dynamics of explaining and understanding are examined from the perspective of conceptual structures embedded in explanations. It is expected, that when pre-service teachers’ conceptual structures embedded in explanations are close enough to each other, conceptual development can occur. Explanations' conceptual structures and understanding are examined from inquiry-based learning and teaching situations of physics through combining the results of content, interaction and speech and voice analyses. The expected outcome of project is novel understanding of the role of conceptual knowledge in explaining and understanding process. It also illuminates the possibilities of voice research in dynamic learning research.
